Wallasey born Pugh started his journalistic career as a reporter on the Birkenhead News.
In 1969 he was appointed editor of the Daily Post and held that position for eight years before moving across to edit its sister title, the Echo, for a further five years.
He retired in 1982 but remained active in the communications industry in Liverpool undertaking consultancy projects.
He died at his Wirral home aged 79. John Pugh John, instinctively, had the essential qualities expected of a true journalist – he unerringly asked a good question and he always told a good story
His ‘nose’ for news sprang, in part, from his Welsh roots which gave him a natural inclination to be inquisitive and an enviable ability easily to engage with folk of all types and conditions.
His abilities as writer and editor were founded on a fine grammar school education, a disposition to read widely, question everything and always to challenge the status quo
He had a charm and sense of humour and mischief, which allowed him to press his enquiries where others quailed.
All these were qualities which, as John’s assistant editor in the 1970s, I admired, learned from and sought to emulate.
John retained, to the last, both his fascination in the way of the world and his love of conversation.
When two or three pals, often journalists, were gathered together, naturally with a glass to hand, it was John [even in his final illness] who encouraged vigorous debate, interspersed with much laughter, and who stoked the fires of memory and rekindled tales of the best of times. We’ll miss him.
