'Major crash' causes edit disruption at BBC

A technical problem at the BBC's MediaCityUK base has forced some in-house producers to hire post-production facilities in Manchester.

That's according to a report in Broadcast which quotes BBC North's controller of production Mark Harrison as saying there was a "major crash" at the facility's central server last month which affected edit suites used by the Children's and Vision departments.

The BBC had not got back to How-Do at the time of writing, but Harrison told Broadcast: "There was a major crash in the central storage on a Friday afternoon [20 January].

"The problem was diagnosed and the system was up and running by the following Monday morning, but it was not running as smoothly as it should have been, so we took everybody off the shared storage to investigate further.”

He added: “We have not had to disrupt any of our productions by a significant degree. Some productions are using local storage to edit on BBC premises and it suited a couple of productions to move to external facilities.”

The report cited several anonymous post bosses who had either been asked to provide quotes to the BBC or had already agreed to take on work.
