42% of BBC staff say yes to Salford move | Print |  Email to a friend

Less than half of BBC staff say yes to Salford move
42% of BBC staff have agreed to relocate their roles to MediaCityUK, which is higher than the corporation expected.

It’s the second round of decision dates for BBC staff affected by the move north.

After the results from senior management, this time it’s the 261 staff working in roles from senior journalists to content makers, production management and engineers.

They fall within BBC grades 8-11 in the key departments Children’s, Learning, Sport, 5 Live and sections of Future, Media and Technology.

“I am excited that so many people have decided to join us to help create the new BBC North and this news is a big boost for our future prospects,” said Peter Salmon, BBC Director North

“What is pleasing is not just the numbers but the quality of the people who are now getting engaged with our new enterprise from some crucial parts of the BBC. This group will play a key role in developing our plans and I want to start working with them this year to shape the new future at BBC North. While the overall percentage is high for a relocation of this size, I do understand that some people are not able to join us, and I completely sympathise with those colleagues for whom it has not been possible, for a variety of personal and family reasons.”

The final set of staff make their decision in the autumn.

"For me the chance to be part of a new beginning for the BBC was the deciding factor in saying yes,” said Ewan Vinnicombe, producer, Blue Peter.

“I want Children's to be at the heart of BBC North and you never normally get a chance like this. It is certainly a big decision for both myself and my partner, but having an attachment in Entertainment at BBC Manchester a few years ago and knowing how much I enjoyed living in the area then, I decided I couldn't say no to this opportunity."

114 people from BBC Sport will make their decisions by July 14th, with the results known 3 days later.

I bet they all voted yes. We'll now see an influx of people from London as they sell their properties and cash in on the lower cost of living.

The question is whether it will benefit Manchester or the pockets of Salford and Lancashire. Will it see a drain of expertise from Manchester City Centre?

Er...surely the headline over this story should read; "58 per cent of BBC staff say 'Sod that for a lark' "??? Oh, sorry, forgot that this is a PR-led website.

Did anyone notice that when the tennis was on BBC2 on Sunday, the opt-out regional news never happened. We lucky yokels were given London area news instead.
Again.
Still, this will keep the influx of southerners uop to date with what really matters in Woking rather than in Wigan.

Anyone who would rather watch regional news than an epic piece of sporting entertainment like that has no pulse
