Ofcom will lift a ban which prevents new commercial radio stations from changing their format within 2 years of launching.
As a result of the decision, the broadcasting watchdog will write to a number of stations, including CityTalk in Liverpool, Manchester’s Rock Radio and Central FM in Preston to advise them of the simplification of the rules.
The regulation was originally put in place to stop potential broadcasters bidding for a particular format, knowing full well that they would change it if they won the bid. It comes into effect as of today, after Ofcom’s radio licensing committee agreed to the changes. The committee said that one it was because it wouldn’t be advertising any more AM or FM licences to the commercial sector. Although the rules have been lifted, major format changes would still be subject to a public consultation. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
