Bauer’s North West radio stations were among the few regional nominations at this year’s 26th Sony Radio Academy Awards.
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 12 May at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Last year 17 of the nominated finalists came from the North West but this year the number has fallen to 14 of which Bauer’s regional stations picked up seven nominations.
Tim Blackmore, chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards said: "With more than 1400 entries from 204 of the UK’s radio stations, and with the crucial involvement of judges from right across the industry, I want to thank my fellow professionals for their ongoing support of the only awards that celebrate the full breadth of our increasingly multi platform output.
“The Sony Radio Academy Awards’ recognition of UK radio’s creativity, integrity and personality remains without equal.”
A new initiative has also been introduced this year: the Sony DAB ‘Rising Star’ Award. Broadcasters were asked to submit entries which were then judged by a panel which drew up a shortlist of five ‘Rising Stars’ – with two of the five based in the North West: Hywel Evans & Jamie Atherton (Rock FM) and the Rob Ellis Show Team (Galaxy Manchester). The winner will be chosen by the public who are being invited to vote for their favourite presenters via Sony UK’s website.
Radio City’s Pete Price and Key 103’s Mike Toolan have both nominated for the second year running as has Silk FM in the smaller station category.
Elsewhere Key 103 has also been nominated for the competition award (Sell me the Answer), and larger station award while fellow Bauer regional stablemate Radio City has also picked up a nomination for large station of the year. City has also been nominated in the sports programme category in addition to Price’s listener participation award. Gary Stein, Key 103's programme director told How-Do: "I am delighted that Key 103 has picked up three Sony nominations this year. "Toolan in the Morning is still Manchester’s most popular commercial breakfast show and being nominated alongside the likes of Johnny Vaughan and Russell Brand in the entertainment category once again shows the calibre of Mike and Chelsea’s act. "It’s also fantastic news that Key has been nominated as UK station of the year and real testament to the work the team has put in to make we remain the most relevant radio station for listeners in Greater Manchester." Catterall Bauer has rounded off its promising regional clean sweep in this year’s awards with Rock FM's Adam Catterall’s nomination as the music radio personality of the year. The BBC is destined to win the key overall station of the year award as the three nominations are Radio 2, Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live.
