Records released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that only two members of BBC staff have applied for a generous relocation package aimed at smoothing their transition from the capital up to the broadcaster’s new base at Mediacity.
The package was announced six months ago and puts aside up to £16.5m in a bid to ameliorate the financial concerns of staff that are set to make the move. It allows the BBC, through a third party firm, to buy employee’s homes for a 'guaranteed purchase price' and then advance the funds to them to start planning for the move. The BBC will then sell the house on to an estate agent once the move has been made, but, potentially, will have to make up any shortfall between the price it receives and the guaranteed purchase price that it has committed to giving to the owner. To date no houses have been bought or sold under the scheme, with the uncertainty in the housing market no doubt impacting on the desire of staff to make long term commitments at the present time. The BBC released a statement noting that it was “entirely satisfied that our relocation package is both fair and value for money for staff.” The much-publicised move to Mediacity will see around 1,500 London-based posts relocating to Salford.
