Phil Roberts, a well-known figure in the radio sector, is to leave his position as acting managing editor of Radio Merseyside for a new challenge as the head of the BBC in the North East and Cumbria.
Roberts joined the BBC in 2005 after a long and celebrated stint in commercial radio. In that time he had been the youngest MD of a commercial station (Red Dragon in Cardiff), presented a breakfast show on MFM, took on the role of group programme director at Emap Radio and risen to be managing director of music and events at Emap in 2002. In the same year he was also voted the most influential person in music radio in the UK. Roberts is already familiar with his new region after enjoying a tenure as managing director of Metro Radio in Newcastle in the late 90s. He said of the new role: “The North East and Cumbria is a fantastic region to work in and I am so excited to be returning to the area and working with the talented team at the BBC to reflect the needs of the audience. “I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to champion the region within the wider BBC." Roberts’ new role is said to make him one of the most senior managers within the BBC. He will now be responsible for all the BBC's output from the region, including BBC Radio Newcastle, BBC Radio Cumbria, BBC Tees, Look North, Inside Out and the local websites. He will also represent the region and its interests to the BBC nationally. Roberts officially takes over the post from out-going incumbent Wendy Pilmer in early May. www.bbc.co.uk Something to add?
