BBC director general, Mark Thompson has confirmed the news earlier this week that the corporation is close to signing a deal with ITV to share resources.
ITV boss, Michael Grade wrote in a newspaper article that a tie-in with the Beeb was the only way that regional news could continue until 2016.
Thompson Thompson’s comments came in a House of Lords Committee, where he told them that talks between the two companies were going well. "We are close to agreement on regional television. ITV has been positive about this approach. We hope to provide a way in which regional services on ITV, if that is the wish of ITV, Ofcom and the government, to continue into the next decade," said Thompson. This apparently new era of working together is hardly surprising with Ofcom’s paper on Public Service Broadcasting due to be published next week. Their recommendations will have an impact across British media and may indeed lead to a new Broadcasting Act. In addition, with bad headlines for the BBC recently and debates surrounding the licence fee, helping to save ITV regional news may even lead to a positive article in the Daily Mail...
