BBC defends its financial support for staff relocations to Salford | Print |  Email to a friend

The BBC has responded vigorously to claims in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph that the circa £17m it has set aside to cover the cost of staff relocations from London to Salford Quays, is an unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money.
The BBC has responded vigorously to claims in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph that the circa £17m it has set aside to cover the cost of staff relocations from London to Salford Quays, is an unnecessary waste of taxpayers’ money.

The Mail in particular splashed with "BBC Licence to Waste Money" on its front page.

A BBC spokesperson maintained patiently that the sums involved were in fact quite standard and amounted to a one-off housing payment of £3,000 and a further £5,000 to help with additional relocation costs. The BBC has also said it will help wherever possible with related matters such as schooling and jobs for partners.

Up to 1500 London-based posts are due to be moved to Salford Quays by 2011. It is thought that up to half of these will be filled by relocating existing BBC staff and the balance by a combination of people relocating from elsewhere in the UK and from people in the North West.

How-Do understands that the BBC’s current application process regarding any new position in any of the five departments moving north, makes it clear that the position will be ultimately based in Salford.

The BBC has also rejected demands from a local MP urging that all the 1500 new posts in Salford are given to local people, stating that it is keen to retain “existing talent” wherever possible.

We should have the choice to have "freeview", Sky or Virgin Media, and least we forget, BT!

I only watch BBC1 for 30 mins for Eastenders (Yes sad I know)

or BBC Three for 2 Pints, but thats finished now and is available on Sky on UK Gold or Dave.

I dont listen to any of the BBC's Radio Stations so why should we have to pay?

Suppose it is cheaper than sky at £35 a month though???

That isn't the point, Sky is commercial where as the Beeb is supposedly not. The BBC should be 100% privatised and start showing commercials rather being the public sector sack of shit that it is.

You sad bastard. I would rather slash my wrists than watch Eastenders. All doom and gloom in the square. Corrie for me anyday. Blanche is a true legend.
