The BBC has announced that Richard Deverell, the current controller of BBC Children’s, is to be the corporation’s chief operating officer for its new departmental home in the emerging MediaCityUK complex.
In the new role Deverell will take responsibility for ‘developing and implementing the strategic and operational infrastructure for BBC North’. In addition he will deputise for his immediate boss when required – that being the recently appointed director of BBC North, and How-Do Awards speaker, Peter Salmon. Salmon said of his new colleague: "This role is fundamental to the success of BBC North and Richard brings with him enormous strategic, editorial and creative experience. "Taken alongside his compelling track record as a creative leader, and his long-term commitment to BBC North, he is an outstanding choice for COO." Deverell is set to continue in his current role until 2010, helping to lead the preparation for the migration of the Children’s department from London to its new home. He called his new position “a unique opportunity”, adding: "Salford can be a showcase for creative excellence, audience focus and a new approach to partnerships, as well as offering new and exciting careers for staff. “I am delighted to be part of the team bringing this vision to life.” Deverell’s appointment follows on the heels of Barbara Slater’s move to the role of director of BBC Sport.
