Caroline Thomson, the BBC's chief operating officer, announced on Friday that it would be relocating a further 130 to 150 London-based posts to Salford Quays as part of its move north by 2011.
The jobs are primarily additions to teams and departments already committed to moving to Salford.
However, the announcement that Radio 5 Live news will now be joining the rest of the radio station has come as a major and unexpected surprise as there was apparently persistent opposition within the BBC to the concept of relocating a ‘national’ news operation away from London. In fact, Thomson added that there would be an “an increased national newsgathering presence with the creation of a news hub with additional correspondents”.
Thomson In a speech in Huddersfield on Friday, Thomson said: "As part of the BBC's drive to become less London-centric and more deeply rooted in the whole of the UK, we will be moving a significant number of additional staff to the new media centre in Salford Quays.
"All of this will strengthen Salford's place as a true network centre.
"And with a stronger BBC presence, there will be even greater potential for Manchester, Salford and the whole of the north of England to become a world class centre of media innovation and technology for the 21st Century."
The other jobs that will be moving are related to the Future Media & Technology (FM&T) division and will mean that there will be over 500 FM&T staff based in Salford by 2011.
The additional jobs means that the number of London-based posts moving north will now climb from under 1500 to circa 1620. A further 800 posts at the BBC’s existing Manchester base will also be moving to Salford.
