Emma Swain, acting controller, BBC Daytime and Early Peak, has commissioned a brand new ‘brain-games’ format show, BrainBox, for BBC Two from BBC Entertainment Manchester.
‘BrainBox’ will feature contestants competing head to head in ‘high jeopardy mind games’ that apparently will require both mental agility and a lot of nerve. Contestants will be playing for money.
Transmission dates for the new show have yet to be decided but are likely to be late autumn or early next year.
The premise behind the show is that putting your brain through regular (daily) exercise improves both memory and communication which in turn can lead to beneficial effects on a person’s ‘wellbeing’. Hence the development of the new daily show BrainBox.
A BBC spokesperson would not comment on the similarities with the success Channel 4 has enjoyed with Countdown. Discussions with potential presenters are underway.
Sumi Connock, commissioning editor for entertainment, daytime and early peak at the Beeb said: "BrainBox is an exciting new format with great play-along value.
"Having worked with BBC Entertainment on game shows such as Identity, we know they can deliver ambitious entertainment formats within daytime budgets."
BrainBox will be executive produced in Manchester by Caroline Roberts-Cherry.
