Ashley Byrne, one of the founders of Made in Manchester and a director of RIG, has issued a statement with regard to the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross phone prank saga that last week led to the resignation of BBC Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas.
Who they? In the statement Byrne talks of his sadness at the departure of Douglas – “her exit is a tremendous loss to the radio industry” – but adds that her decision is “a real sign of her integrity.”Byrne, who in his role at RIG is a voice for the independent radio production sector, went on to opine: "There are clear lessons that must be learnt from the events of the past two weeks and it is essential that the BBC's editorial checks and balances are properly implemented at all levels of the radio production process. "However, despite the complaints generated largely by the coverage of this story, the vast majority of the public are actually bemused by the amount of attention this has got. “It's been whipped up to hysterical proportions and broadcast journalists in radio and television need to seriously think about how much exposure they give to stories raised initially by the tabloid press." Made in Manchester has made numerous documentaries for Radio 2, as well as BBC Radio 4, 1Xtra and the World Service. www.madeinmanchester.tv Something to add?
