Carl Hopkins, ex of Alvaston Media and owner of agencybods, will be hitting small screens across the nation tonight as the star of Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire.
Hopkins
The show sees Hopkins, the former chief executive of direct marketing giant JDA, travelling to the chronically depressed mining town of Easington in County Durham (arguably even more depressed since being the setting for Billy Elliot, Ed) to see if he can make a difference.
Hopkins – who, in the running theme of the series, hides his real identity – takes on the role of community warden and integrates into the lives of the locals over a ten-day stay.
He discovers how the townspeople have faced up to the closure of the pit and the initiatives – such as a city farm and welfare centre – they themselves have started to try and stem the decline in the community.
Hopkins himself grew up on a tough council estate and apparently sees similarities between his situation as a youngster and that of many of the locals now.
Those of you that tune in tonight will be able to see how Hopkins contributes to the community and how he is touched by the experience and the warmth of the locals.
As he himself said after filming “I know more people here than I do in the place I’ve lived for ten years."
