Carter made redundant from GMG: 'a shame but a new opportunity' | Print |  Email to a friend

Julian Carter, the Manchester-based group sales director for GMG Radio, has opted to take redundancy and look for new opportunities in the regional media arena, rather than relocating his family down to London.
Julian Carter, the Manchester-based group sales director for GMG Radio, has opted to take redundancy and look for new opportunities in the regional media arena, rather than relocating his family down to London.

Carter learned last week that the group had decided to make his position redundant and restructure the management of the sales team to make it more London focused.

This is leading to the new position of commercial director in the capital, with the firm also looking to take on a new national sales director.

However, Carter told How-Do on Friday that he had no desire to relocate his wife and eight month old son to London and had therefore decided to take the redundancy option when his position ceases to exist in March.

He explained: “I’ve always lived in the North West and I’m happy to travel – I spend two days a week in London now – but I didn’t want to be in the position where I had to move my family there.”

Carter: six years with GMG
Carter said that it was “a shame” his six year stay at the firm was drawing to a conclusion, but that he “completely understood” the firm’s decision with regards to his current role.

Remaining upbeat he added that he was “excited” about new opportunities and said that he was “looking forward to making an impact, possibly outside of radio”.

“I’m open to fresh challenges,” he said. “I’m only 36 and I’ve been involved in the radio industry for the past 13 years, so maybe it’s time I broadened my horizons. I’m not going to rule anything out – on the media or agency side – at the moment.”

Carter added that it would be “business as usual” until he steps down at the end of February and noted that he was leaving the business with fond memories; “it’s been a great six years” he said.

Carter joined GMG after working for Capital and Century, signing up as deputy group sales director before being promoted the following year.

He said his proudest achievements were setting up the regional sales team, initiating the national sponsorship and promotion team, as well as the digital commercial department, and being “deeply involved” in the acquisition and integration of the Century and Saga radio brands.

“It was an exciting time,” he concluded.

A shame for Carter and a shame that they are centralising the senior roles in London. There are clients, agencies and budgets here too.
