Channel 4 considers regional news broadcasts
Reports today suggest that Channel 4 is looking to run a regional news service to bolster its public service credentials.

It's believed that Channel 4 has already held talks with ITV and, should the move go ahead, it would launch a regional news service online through its 4IP PSB project, with a potential move to More 4 and possibly Channel 4.

A C4 spokesman said: "We are in general dialogue with Ofcom, the government and other interested parties about maintaining competition with the BBC across a number of key public service genres."

It's believed that Channel 4 isn’t keen to take on ITV’s entire commitment to regional news due to the costs involved and also because it wouldn't fit within their own remit.

Channel 4 is current trying to persuade Ofcom that it deserves public funding. In its submissions to the regulator, there were concerns that ITV’s threats to reduce its presence in the regions would detrimentally affect Channel 4’s own news output.

ITV part-own ITN which is Channel 4's news supplier, meaning that currently the channel can access regionally sourced footage.Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.

I think C4 should have their own regional news programming, but to bring a different edge to it.

Can you image living in Manchester and being confronted by 4 cameras and reporters, because your nextdoor neighbour fiddled the Council Tax Benefit system?

"I've already told Channel M, BBC, Granada Reports all day.. and now you want to know how long I've lived here without knowing about it?"

This would be a fabulous move! I think Channel 4's news programmes are fabulous, and I'd love to see how they report news from a regional angle. I expect that they would report actual news, and not the airy fairy "my cat got stuck up a tree" rubbish that ITV churn out each night.
