Kevin Lygo, Channel 4’s director of television and content has promised major investment in the nations and regions over the coming year.
He’s promised to commit to their £100m annual spend on regional indies and introduce a £1m fund to develop returning series from nations and regions.
Lygo Lygo added that slots in strands (Dispatches, Cutting Edge, Comedy Lab etc) would be kept free for shows produced from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. His announcement comes with a big “if” and that “if” relates to Ofcom’s announcement tomorrow regarding the future of public service broadcasting. Lygo’s the latest big name to make policy announcements and recommendations at the well-timed Television from the Nations and Regions conference in Salford. The investment in the regions may sweeten the pill for indies hit by ITV’s comments about taking programming outside the M25 - it was hit by a fine this week for failing to meet its targets for the second year running. Channel 4 will also be employing a new commissioning editor at its Glasgow base.Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
