This week marks the tenth anniversary of a mutually beneficial relationship between the University of Salford and MEN Media’s Channel M.
The two have been collaborating since 1998, with the institution providing over 1,000 students to work across the channel’s output in roles such as presenters, researchers, camera operators, producers and directors. The choice for students This has given students valuable opportunities to gain media experience, while their efforts have led to ten Royal Television Society nominations for Channel M.The station even has its own studio at the Salford University campus - designed and built by trainee broadcast engineers To celebrate the fruits of their relationship Channel M will this week be transmitting award-winning programmes made by Salford students, while a reunion is also planned, as is a special dedication at the forthcoming RTS (North West) awards. Professor Ron Cook, head of the University’s International Media Centre, said: “No other university offers its students access to a TV channel which, like Channel M, is broadcast as a commercial concern. “We tell students when they arrive that it will be identical to working for a TV station. Sometimes that can be a bit intimidating but they soon gain confidence and the invaluable experience of working for a real TV station.” David Johnson, Channel M’s general manager, added: “Over 40% of our workforce is made up of Salford graduates. “Having people come into the company who not only have relevant work experience, but are also familiar with how we operate is a huge benefit for us.” www.salfordchannelm.org www.channelm.salford.ac.uk/ www.channelm.co.uk/
