Guardian Media Group has confirmed to How-Do that David Johnson, the general manager of its Manchester-based TV station Channel M, is set to leave the operation at the end of this week.
How-Do understands that Johnson's departure came after a meeting with GMG bosses.
He has been with the outfit for the past five years.Alison Halstead, GMG Radio's head of communications, confirmed that Johnson was leaving the business "at the end of the week to pursue other opportunities."
When quizzed over the search for a new controller for the station - a hunt that began at the beginning of last month - Halstead commented that the firm has "a recruitment freeze on at the moment " but still hoped "to appoint in due course."
The station has undergone a (much-publicised) tumultuous time over the past year and a half, losing the majority of its staff and programming and being excluded from Trinity Mirror's deal to buy MEN Media , before emerging with new content and, as imparted by GMG North West MD Andy Carter, a long-term vision for the future .

2 By A musketeer , on 22-07-2010 12:14 Poisoned chalice?? Perhaps a good opportunity with someone with some REAL television knowledge and a REAL grasp of what makes Manchester the vibrant city it is. Please God, no Motown programmes......

5 By A Musketeer , on 22-07-2010 13:51 @ Dee Veecam Last I heard the Shoalin Monks were looking after them.
6 By Jonny B , on 22-07-2010 13:42 The most interesting thing about all of this is that the students from Salford University seem to have survived all the kerfuffle, and it looks like they're still producing some really admirable content for the M. If you haven't come across their stuff yet, check this out: www.channelm.salford.ac.uk Good on 'em, I'd say!

10 By A Musketeer , on 22-07-2010 14:36 @ number 8 Indeed they were, indeed they were. They hit the mark with so much precision those lucky enough to have witnessed the performance were truly left open-mouthed. A television first I believe.

13 By Number 732 , on 22-07-2010 15:23 It would be a huge shame if someone sold the channel m archive on eBay wouldn't it?
14 By D'Artagnan , on 22-07-2010 15:57 Is that right Number 732. Wasn't bought by a bloke called Jeremy Hunt was it?

16 By A Musketeer , on 23-07-2010 12:54 On a serious note - just where does this leave Channel M? No GM and a recruitment freeze does not bode well. What are their plans for output? Anybody have any answers?
17 By Mike Giggler , on 23-07-2010 13:09 I think a merger with DM Digital is the way ahead. These two highly respected brands should come together to unleash the broadcasting equivalent of what happens inside the large Hadron collider when it is firing on all cylinders. Either that, or transmit Debbie Does Dallas on a loop - that will get viewing figures up.
18 By pescot 98 , on 23-07-2010 14:24 "On a serious note - just where does this leave Channel M?" hopefully in the hands of someone that understands you cannot run a station on exploiting work ex & over using the business mantra "if you don't like it, you can always leave" or "can you see barbed wire on the door"
19 By Red Head , on 23-07-2010 14:39 Ee bay gum!!! 'Appen those cheap tapes find t'way all orver t'place...
20 By A Musketeer , on 23-07-2010 15:34 @pescot 98 So are those the reasons behind the demise of CM?
21 By A Musketeer , on 26-07-2010 13:19 How feasible would it be for whoever owns CM now to take a look at their old library footage and maybe look to re-edit certain pieces in order to provide some content? Not sure if CM are still broadcasting or what the plans are - but this would at least give them something to showcase??
22 By pescot 98 , on 26-07-2010 13:40 "So are those the reasons behind the demise of CM?" yep! add to that, no real investment in programming "the programmes are what we wrap the ads around", also can you name any other mid size enterprise that does not have a marketing department\strategy Sales! anyone with a ounce of ability was hoyed off to MEN media sales to try to plug that sinking ship. lack of co-operation from (most) GMG MEN media ahem! colleagues, why no listing in The Guide, OMM. Something to do with the 'we don't need to be told about new bands from a provincial outpost, thank you, we're London', kinda attitude. I stand by it, lots of talented people with the ability to make good TV on a tight budget with a wider appeal than the M60, if they were allowed to & supported properly finally if the vanity of certain people there was reigned in...... those bloody fashion shows, sod the MCFC show, we have Wigan Ath now..... & BARNEY FOR GODS SAKE! What a waste the whole bloody thing became
23 By A Musketeer , on 26-07-2010 14:45 Thanks pesct 98. Seems there were several issues the wider audience were not aware of. Some of their content was pretty good, I was happy to watch the news programmes sometimes as they DID focus on my city. Some of the sports programmes lacked content and I always thought there was no regular Manc 'face' of the Channel which may have given it an identity. Manchester is/has always been a gutsy, earthy, ballsy, in your face city and as far as I'm concerned the idea of making Andy Crane (no offence Andy) the 'face' of the Channel was a huge error.
24 By One of the 4 horsemen. , on 26-07-2010 15:07 Still want to know whose idea it was to commission Channel M Today? Clearly someone thought it was a good idea unlike every viewer!
25 By Andy Crane , on 26-07-2010 17:24 "....The idea of making Andy Crane (no offence Andy) the 'face' of the Channel was a huge error." None taken!
26 By A Musketeer , on 27-07-2010 12:03 'CM Today' looked like a poor man's version of the news shows that were axed........for me this was a clear sign there was no leadership, action plan or long-term commitment. Was this whole issue an exercise in futility from start to finish? Was there ever a plan, either short OR long term?
