City Talk tunes up after format change | Print |  Email to a friend

Bauer's City Talk 105.9 has taken the wraps off its new scheduling line-up. The move comes in the aftermath of Ofcom's decision to grant the station a format change, as it looks to secure its long term future in the face of the advertising downturn.

Bauer's City Talk 105.9 has taken the wraps off its new scheduling line-up. The move comes in the aftermath of Ofcom's decision to grant the station a format change, as it looks to secure its long term future in the face of the advertising downturn.
Less talk, more music
City Talk was given permission by Ofcom last month to alter its 100% speech format and incorporate music at off-peak times.

This was granted in the face of an economic atmosphere that had "reduced interest from advertisers in experimenting with this new on-air opportunity.”

Ofcom's decision led to a 'reshaping of the teams' at City Talk and an unconfirmed number of job losses.

The station has today unveiled its new programming structure with 100% speech at peak times - such as breakfast, drivetime and Pete Price's late night slot - and weekday shows that combine talk with music ranging from the 60s through to the 90s.

Music will also "feature heavily" during overnight shows, while sport remains a key part of the schedule, particularly over the weekend.

Price still right for City Talk
In a statement from City Talk station director Richard Maddock said: “Now on City Talk 105.9 we’ve got the best of both worlds. Entertaining, informative conversation and the greatest music from the last four decades.

"First and foremost the station will continue to be passionate about all things Liverpool and the surrounding area, but with the added appeal of music. There is now something for everyone from news and documentaries, to sport and advice slots.”

The complete format is as follows:

Roy Basnett 10am - 2pm

Have you heard it? It's terrible - ofcom should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this - do they honestly think that demonstrates consumer choice? I cant imagine anyone tuning in to listen to it

I can not believe they can get away with running a chart show on a Sunday afternoon. That is just beyone belief!

Ofcom have absolutely ruined this industry resulting in many many job cuts.

City Talk’s content was of a very high standard luring me away from BBC Five Live. Now with the new format: music for job cuts of some of its best presents, it is now of a very low standard and I have returned to BBC Five Live & Talk Sport. It is a matter of time before this station folds.
