Coronation Street's 'Celtic bias' incenses fans, changes script | Print |  Email to a friend

The script of an upcoming episode of Coronation Street has seemingly been altered after ‘dozens’ of complaints from angry Glasgow Rangers fans.

The script of an upcoming episode of Coronation Street has seemingly been altered after ‘dozens’ of complaints from angry Glasgow Rangers fans.
The Steet: not home to Gers fans
In a story that emerged over the weekend it was reported that the character Tony Gordon, played by Scots actor Gray O’Brien, was due to utter that he was allergic to "warm beer, the English national anthem and Glasgow Rangers."

This would have followed on from an earlier remark, already broadcast, when he noted: "I could no more be interested in Rosie Webster than I could support Glasgow Rangers."

Fans of the Ibrox club apparently responded to this slight by besieging the phone lines at ITV – well, “dozens” of them did anyway – to lodge complaints.

As a result the upcoming ‘allergy’ remark has now been rewritten.

An ITV spokesperson was quoted as saying: " We have to bear in mind that it does seem to have caused some upset so the decision was made to take the line out.

"It doesn't compromise the drama of the episode and if it did then the line definitely wouldn't have been taken out."

"We also felt in the absence of a character balancing things up on the other side of the Old Firm, it was a line not worth repeating."

(A rumour that an upcoming episode of the show entitled ‘Man City are crap and all the money in the world won’t change that’ has had to be entirely re-written was confirmed as utter bullshit at the time of writing. Ed)

What ever happened to freedom of speach or freedom of the press ? You should be able to say what you want on the TV, people have three choices either change the channel, watch it, or tutn it off. The choice is yours. We're not living in a Communist country.

Interesting. Rangers fans sing openly about murdering people based on their faith. But a fictional character on a soap opera mentions that he doesn't support Rangers and the fans are suddenly mortally offended. It shows the small mindedness of many fans of this club. As does the Manchester UEFA debacle.
