Coronation Street producers have confirmed that the soap will broadcast a live episode to mark the show’s 50th anniversary later this year.In a move that will coincide with the much-hyped ‘tram crash’ plot, the show will emulate its 40th anniversary celebration with a live action broadcast (the birthday episode in 2000 was an hour long).

A statement from the show noted: “"Everyone is very excited, if not to say a little nervous, about the prospect of a live episode.

"But we felt it was fitting to go out live to the nation to celebrate such a prestigious anniversary."

The tram crash plotline is anticipated to bring a ‘cast cull’ of sorts, as several undisclosed characters exit the show when the ill-fated Metrolink tram exits the street’s viaduct and hits the cobbles.

sally should never been allowed to talk to molly for safety reasons, should have been removed by fireman. sorry to be a kiljoy.

Those characters can realistically be killed off. One female tram driver was busy texting, head down, with her phone on her ample lap as she sailed a tram along Eccles New Rd last Sunday. Completely oblivious to anyone, but in fairness very convenient for Hope Hospital casualty dept had she caused an accident.

Kill off the damn lot its well past its sell by date with interchangable charachters who are one thing one week and something else the next and nobody cares about anymore.Eeeeee it werent like that in my day if it hadnt been for that last milk stout who kno.......................

The characters need not fear being written out in a catastrophe - the chances of Metrolink trams being in service are almost non-existent. As a result they will board a replacement bus service that will edge its way along Oxford Road very slowly. Instead, a new plot thread will show them writing letters of complaint to GMPTE.
