65,000 incorrect letters have been sent to people in the Llandudno area, and some parts of Liverpool, Newport, Chester and Lancaster, informing them that they qualify for assistance ahead of the upcoming digital switchover.
Oops The error occurred due to misinformation provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and led to an apology being issued by Ben Bradshaw, the recently installed culture secretary. The letters informed the recipients that they were eligible for financial help under the Digital Switchover Help Scheme, which is run by the BBC and has been established to help vulnerable groups negotiate the change to digital broadcasting. Further letters were sent to people informing them that they had to pay £40 before accessing the scheme. Bradshaw responded to the mistakes by stating: "The DWP apologises for these mistakes and has informed the Information Commissioners Office." "DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport), DWP and the Help Scheme are working closely to ensure that these errors do not occur again." Another letter is now set to be sent to the original recipients apologising for any inconvenience caused. www.digitaluk.co.uk Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
