Lancashire actor Colin Bean, best known for his role in Dad’s Army, has died, aged 82.
Sgt Sponge (centre) (BBC) Bean had spent his final years at Wickham Hall Care Home in Springfield and died in Wigan Infirmary on Saturday.
He played Private Sponge in the long running series and although he had few lines, he appeared in almost every episode of the sitcom from 1968 to 1977. His break came in 1968 following many years in repertory when his friend and Dad’s Army creator Jimmy Perry, watched him perform. Further television roles saw him in No Hiding Place, Z Cars, Up Pompeii, Crown Court and Hi-de-Hi.
Later in his life, he suffered from arthritis, but despite limited mobility he still travelled to Dad’s Army reunions and organised 2 in his home town. His autobiography Who Do You Think You Are Kidding? has been reprinted three times.
