Ex Brookie actor now DJ quits BBC Radio Merseyside | Print |  Email to a friend

Simon O’Brien, has resigned as a breakfast show DJ on BBC Radio Merseyside after a trailer was mistakenly broadcast with O’Brien advising that the government and planners should go f**k themselves.

The trailer was promoting fellow DJ Roger Phillips’ evening programme and related to a feature on the redevelopment of Edge Lane. O’Brien clearly has different views about how Edge Lane, aka smack alley, should be redeveloped.

O’Brien, 42, who played Damon Grant in Brookside and was the more entertaining co-host (with Magenta Devine) of holiday programmes, was also involved with Five Live’s 606 in its early days and also dabbles in property in the city.

His co-host on the breakfast show, Lucinda Moore, will now host the programme on her own until further notice.

It is believed the station received a number of complaints from listeners.

O’Brien said: “I am very sorry for the lapse, which will have caused offence to many listeners.

"The pre-recorded material, which was entirely my work, was never meant to be broadcast.

"I further stress that the views aired were my personal views and in no way reflect the editorial position of BBC Radio Merseyside or the BBC in general.

"In the circumstances, I have decided the correct thing to do is to resign from BBC Radio Merseyside with immediate effect."

A listener from Halewood told How-Do that “I must admit I have often raised an eyebrow with previous off-the-cuff remarks made by Simon. He was, however, a refreshing change though and I for one will miss him.”

A copy of the tape is apparently now doing the rounds and How-Do would much appreciate a copy or transcript.

The BBC has launched an investigation into the background behind the trailer’s broadcast.

What a relief that he has gone. He was totally unsuited to radio and it has been a disaster since day one. He tried to shock with "controversial" comments but usually fell flat as they were about pet subjects such as the environment, cycling and architecture. The programme sounds a lot more professional without him. Stick to riding your bike, climbing mountains and presenting third-rate TV shows Simon.
