Final tranche of BBC staff vote on MediaCityUK move - 45% say yes | Print |  Email to a friend

The BBC is due to kick start a large scale recruitment process ahead of its departmental migration from London to Salford's MediaCityUK, following on from the results of the final round of staff voting on the relocation.
The BBC is due to kick start a large scale recruitment process ahead of its departmental migration from London to Salford's MediaCityUK, following on from the results of the final round of staff voting on the relocation.

45% of staff (234 individuals) between the pay grades 2 and 7 said yes to the move, mimicking the earlier proportion of senior staff that agreed to relocate. While good news for the BBC in terms of the positive response rate, it is perhaps better news for the regional media community as some 800 'vacant' roles now need to be filled.

The broadcaster had been informed (by relocation partner Cartus) that anything above a 40% 'yes' vote was to be considered as high for a large-scale public or private sector relocation.

This led BBC North chief operating officer Richard Deverell to state that "the leadership team is delighted with the number and calibre of staff from across the moving departments," although he added that "(we) appreciate that the move is not right for everyone."

Rough calculations would suggest that the number of staff the move 'is not right for' comes in at about 800, meaning a wealth of opportunities lie ahead within the BBC's new MediaCityUK home.

Of this Deverell commented: "Now the main part of the internal decision-making is complete, we will begin the next stage of the process which will involve a significant recruitment exercise as well as working hard on the redeployment of those staff who aren't moving to BBC North."

However, in a statement from the institution it was also noted that "already nearly 1,000 staff from across the BBC, whose roles are not moving to BBC North, have expressed interest in the move" - although it appears as though 'expressing interest' translates to registering for information via the staff intranet, rather than anything more concrete.

In total, five departments and 1,500 positions are moving from the capital to Salford, along with 800 staff from the BBC's current base in Manchester.

At least people that actually want the jobs and want to be here now get the chance to apply!

"......800 'vacant' roles now need to be filled"
er...NEED to be filled? Why, exactly? Would the world end if they were not? No. Why not leave them unfilled and reduce the license fee by 50 percent, then have the private sector create content for the alleged gaps in the schedule?

...that's far to sensible. at the BBC it takes 35+ people to even contemplate making a 'cheap' daytime programme.
in the commercial world they'd do it with 5 staff and 10 freelancers (and t would be better quality)
i feel sorry for the poor luvvies who want to stay in the easy life at the beeb but are now forced oop north or find alternative employment in the real world.

Hm, good news I guess - but I'm not sure how happy I am about the imminent influx of Londoners

I'm a proper northener like, however I'm amazed that 45% would prefer to move to Manchester than stay in London.

No offence Manchester folk, but London is about a thousand times better (for culture, for shopping, for bars, for clubs, for vibrancy, for attractions, for almost everything.

Manchester has cheaper housing and general living expenses but I can think of little else. Oh hang on - the people are a lot friendlier of course. And funnier.

Would be interested in views on what else can attract these reet trendy meejah folk up north?

...possibly the fact they're unemployable anywhere else apart from the BBC?

London's nowhere near as good as it makes out to be...I mean a London club has never won the European Cup!! Even Nottingham's managed that!

I'm sure the 800 souls who do make the trek north will be greeted by 100,000 northerners, whippets 'n all...
"those that die will be the lucky ones"
