There were plentiful cheers and tears (of joy of course) for regional radio stations in the Sony Awards on Monday evening, as several commercial stations succeeded in wresting the gongs from the hands of the BBC networks.
The big winners of the night were Bauer Radio’s Key 103, which succeeded in securing the coveted prize for station of the year (TSA over 1m), while also collecting the award for competition of the year, and Macclesfield’s Silk FM, which scored a surprise win in the station of the year (TSA under 300,000) category. Liverpool’s Radio City also continued its successful run with its ‘all the tickets are in the wrong hands’ programme taking home the top sports award. Andi Durrant from Galaxy also picked up the sought after prize for music broadcaster of the year. Tim Blackmore, chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards, said of this year’s winners: "These awards demonstrate that however many new platforms emerge, British broadcasters continue to create and to deliver truly outstanding examples of audio communication.” Away from the stations themselves All Out Productions also deserves an honourable mention for collecting its tenth Sony gong. The Manchester-based indie picked up the bronze award in the documentary category for its Asian Nation broadcast on BBC Asian Network. Something to add? Then leave a comment below or email us now.
