Global Radio announces intention to network Galaxy programming | Print |  Email to a friend

Global Radio, which recently succeeded in its protracted battle to buy GCap, has announced that it intends to network the majority of its programming across its Heart and Galaxy stations. This will impact heavily upon local favourite Galaxy Manchester.

The strategy was relayed yesterday by Global’s chief executive Ashley Tabor, with an initiation date of 28 April earmarked for the changes.

These would appear to entail, with regard to Galaxy, the networking of all shows from 10am to 4pm and from 7pm to 6am on weekdays. All weekend programming, from 7pm on Friday through to 6am on Monday will also be centralised.

The networked Galaxy shows will be based out of Leeds.

This move will decimate the current line-up of Galaxy Manchester, which can be viewed in full here.

Justifying the changes Tabor said: “It will be national at the right time of day and local at the right time of day, offering people local programming when they really want it. What you end up with is a quasi-national radio station.”

"People assume networking is about big name DJs. It's not, it's about quality presenters.

“If you take 50 different radio stations there cannot possibly be 50 good presenters at every station in a particular slot. Why not take the two or three quality class players and put them across the network.”

Current Galaxy presenters Sacha Brooks and Matt Spokes will present the new networked weekday shows.

Industry reports have suggested that Taborn will now announce a similar strategy for the newly acquired One Network (previously part of GCap).

If so this will impact regionally on Birkenhead-based station Wirral’s Buzz.

It won't make any difference to "Birkenhead-based station Wirral's Buzz" at all because no local programming is broadcast from there anyway. It all comes from Wrexham, while evenings, late nights and chunks of the weekends come from other GCap sites.
