GMG Radio, which runs its UK news operation from Manchester, has axed as of this week its two daily 15 minute news programmes which ran across its network of 12 stations broadcasting under the Real, Century, Smooth and Rock brands.
Fourteen journalists are based at GMG Radio’s Salford Quay news hub. The company is adamant that no redundancies will occur because of the changes.
Last year the company reorganised its news output by concentrating resources into Manchester, Glasgow and London.
GMG said it is “Planning to refocus our news resource to give our stations a more original and campaigning news feel.”
The company added that by removing the two daily news slots, it will “Free up reporting resource within the award winning news teams to focus on providing exclusive material for key bulletins as well as news specials on the issues most relevant to our audiences.”
Rea A new initiative is also being introduced across the group called ‘The Big Story’. How-Do understands that this new promotional strapline will become the umbrella title for GMG’s news specials and campaigns strands which should involve news programming across some or all of its stations
The first group commission was broadcast on 2 May, prior to the reorganisation announcement. The programme was ‘The Search for Madeleine – One Year On’. The programme was aired on the Real, Century and Smooth networks. One reporter is understood to have flown from Manchester to cover the story from Portugal.
GMG Radio’s group head of news James Rea said: “By refocusing our news resource we will be able to provide more compelling and original news content for our stations with a focus on the key day parts of breakfast and drive time.”
Century has three nominations for its news programmes at the forthcoming Sony Awards on 12 May.
