Manchester’s GMG Radio has announced a special line-up of programming for Smooth Radio to mark the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Presenter Mark Goodier is making the trip to the Big Apple with Gary Burton, who will be covering special remembrance events live from Ground Zero.
Goodier will be talking to stars with connections to the city who watched the events unfold - this line-up includes Barry Manilow, Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks and Alicia Keys.
In addition a one hour documentary will beam out directly before Goodier’s show at 1pm.
‘9/11: The British Story’’ will focus on Britons who either experienced the attacks at close hand or lost friends and loved ones in the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers.
This broadcast will feature an interview with Elizabeth Turner, who lost her husband when she was seven months pregnant with their first child, and former Lancashire Assistant Chief Fire Officer John Williamson, who lost his close friend Peter Ganci, Chief of the Fire Department in New York.
GMG Radio’s group programme director John Simons said of the schedule: “Together these two programmes provide listeners with some compelling accounts and tragic stories of events that changed the world forever.
“The stories conjure powerful images in the mind of events that we all remember as if they were yesterday. It’s radio at its best.”
