A link up between Granada News and Uniform has been causing concern and confusion in Liverpool. (beware, does contain spoilers!).
Missing The pair have brought a Superlambanana to life and according to the latest video from Granada Reports, it’s currently roaming the streets of the city, after escaping from its cage. The initial idea for the stunt came from Uniform’s Nick Howe who wanted to create a viral on YouTube to promote their sponsorship of one of the 'animals.' He approached reporter Matt O’Donoghue to appear onscreen to add some authenticity to the whole project. "We came up with the idea of caging the live animal and creating a back story about how this was the only real live one in captivity, this would then give us the opportunity to showcase our animation and film making skills, and create a really big noise about it generate a real buzz," explained MD Nick Howe. "We wanted it to be interactive as well hence the blog, the escape half way through the parade, the flyer campaign, and finally the link up with Granada." "I asked Richard Frediani (head of news) what he thought about one of his hard news reporting staff being involved in a spoof on the world wide web," added O’Donoghue.
Happier times "I ended up talking him round into taking three pieces from me, which would go out on Granada Reports … the third and my personal favourite is still to be broadcast." They spent half a day story boarding, then a day filming around Liverpool. After that they took the rushes back to Uniform and arranged them in the correct order, before their technical team inserted the animated creature through CG graphics. "We hired in an HD camera for the day from FACT and a Granada cameraman, Pete Rowland, shot the lot, interviews, pieces to camera and voxes," continued O’Donoughue. "The whole lot had to be filmed with nothing there, but pretending it was and then the animation was masked in later. The voxes were done by taking the media that was already on the web, out on an iphone. "Finally I was given the almost finished piece which I took back to Granada and worked with editor Mark Hoxley to put the finishing touches to it."
"The reaction when we showed people the moving superlambs was amazing – everyone thought it was real and backed up with some patter, they swallowed it hook, line and sinker … apart from the lady who eventually exclaimed ‘it can’t be real, it’s yellow!’ Of all things; it has no eyes, no way to eat and no ears to speak of but … ‘it’s yellow.'" We haven’t been able to determine an exact date for the third and final piece, but you can keep up to date with Lamby’s exploits on Granada, ITV Local or Uniform’s very own blog . Something to add?
