Hollyoaks is apparently turning its back on any sense of festive cheer this Christmas, with a plot line echoing the cases of 60s child killer Mary Bell and the more recent murder of James Bulger in Merseyside, the home of the soap's production firm Lime Pictures.
Jones: dark secrets
The long-running Channel 4 series is set to secure tabloid headlines with a story that will see pole dancer Loretta Jones (played by Melissa Walton) reunited with childhood best friend Chrissy.
The new arrival then reveals that she and Jones killed a child when they were 12 years old and, as with the Bulger case, then began a new chapter of their lives with fresh identities.
Wary of how the plot could potentially offend some viewers, and other members of the public, an insider at the show told The Sun: "We appreciate the episodes deal with a sensitive subject but it has been thoroughly researched.
"The drama is about how Loretta reacts to Chrissy's arrival back in her life and how she copes with all the memories coming flooding back."
