Commercial radio stations and the BBC have today unveiled a new online radio player, which will allow users to listen to every licensed radio station in the UK.
The UK Radioplayer will let people search content by subject, musical genre and even song title and is said to include student and community stations as well as the major ones.
It was announced as Tim Davie, the BBC's director of audio and music spoke at the Media Festival in Manchester and showed delegates how the system could work.
"This is a really exciting development and a result of focused, collaborative thinking within the radio industry. The aim of this service is to grow listening across the industry and help preserve radio's unique position,” said Davie.
Taylor It’s early days yet, as GMG Radio, Global Radio, RadioCentre and the BBC have only just signed heads of terms for the project, but it’s expected to go live next year.
"This collaborative project reflects the industry's commitment to an improved user experience for radio online as IP-enabled devices proliferate. The new opportunities for advertisers will add to the growing number of cross-platform solutions already in place,” said Stuart Taylor, chief executive, GMG Radio. The player will be launched through each radio station’s website, the console will have a “standard look and functionality, irrespective of which station is being listening to.”
At first it will be available to all Ofcom-licenced networks and only through desktop computers. However, later versions will be made for smartphones and other internet-enabled devices.
The UK Radioplayer will be launched subject to consultation with the BBC Trust and RadioCentre board.
