Key 103 launches media training sessions led by John Pickford | Print |  Email to a friend

Key 103 Radio's multi-award winning head of news and sport, John Pickford, is launching media training sessions targeting companies and professional communicators in the North West.
Key 103 Radio's multi-award winning head of news and sport, John Pickford, is launching media training sessions targeting companies and professional communicators in the North West.

The new initiative, although apparently commercial in design, is also part of a wider drive by the Bauer station to engage in new areas with its local community. Fellow Bauer station in Preston, Rock FM, has previously toured its locality with a ‘Media Bus’.

This latest Bauer initiative is also potentially cute in that it will help to widen Pickford’s reputation and presence among several new audiences including a number of budget holders and influencers together with communications professionals whose attention Key 103 is keen to attract.

Pickford is widely acknowledged to be one of the experienced news editors in the business, having spent almost three decades in journalism, the bulk of them leading news gathering at Key 103 and at its former incarnation Piccadilly Radio.

The sessions, which will be held at Key’s Manchester studios, are priced initially at £849 plus vat for up to 12 delegates, are likely to find a receptive audience given that Pickford combines both credibility with current influence, something which the majority of other media trainers don’t offer as they typically have ended their journalism careers.

The sessions will give inside advice on how to sell stories in to the media, how the media works and how to prepare for live interviews, along with an introduction to media law and Ofcom guidance.

Participants will also have hands on experience of a live radio interview carried out by professional broadcast journalists.

Pickford said: “I’m really looking forward to hosting the sessions and passing on my first hand experience to business professionals.

“We see hundreds of press releases arriving everyday in the news room – with us imparting a little knowledge back, we can ensure that more of them grab our attention and make it on air.  And with the interview training, we can ensure that your company or client get the most out of being on air.”
