A document released under the Freedom of Information Act has revealed further details of the relocation package that the BBC is offering staff members to help facilitate the broadcaster’s multi-departmental move from London to Salford’s MediaCityUK development.
The corporation is sweetening the deal for staff with a tax-free lump sum payment of £8,000 to cover various relocation costs. This will be made available to those that make the move permanently, being paid out after two years at the new base.
In addition, as previously reported, the BBC is offering to buy houses from some staff under a guaranteed purchase scheme that will see homeowners receive 85% of the market value. This has been scaled down from the 95% originally offered.
A ‘remote location allowance’ is also available and allows staff who keep a house in the south before making a permanent move to the region to claim up to £1,900 a month in expenses.
This is to cover rent, bills and a weekly return to the south for a maximum of two years.
Staff heading North will also be entitled to receive a £3,000 allowance for fittings such as new curtains and carpets.
