The latest RAJAR figures suggest that commercial radio stations are gradually winning back market share from the BBC nationally, although in the North West the BBC stations are overall holding their own.

The most listened to regional stations for the period ending June 07 were Century (710,000), Smooth (622,000), Key 103 (502,000), Radio City (442,000), Galaxy (411,000), BBC Merseyside (341,000), Rock FM (283,000), BBC Lancashire (235,000), BBC Manchester (217,000) and BBC Stoke (163,000).

BBC Cumbria, Lancashire and Stoke all declined in listener numbers over the quarter while Manchester and Merseyside showed increases. BBC Cumbria, Merseyside and Stoke remain the three stations with the highest listener penetration of their respective audiences in the North West.

Among the bigger regional stations, Rock FM and Radio City were the biggest fallers with both stations losing circa 2% of their market share.

Xfm continued to make progress and GMG Radio will be delighted with sharp increases at Century and Smooth reversing earlier periods of sharp falls for both stations.

Roy Bennett, managing director of the two GMG stations said: “This is a fantastic set of results for both GMG Radio stations in the North West. The teams here work incredibly hard to make sure that our listeners get a great mix of music, news, sport and interactivity, and the increases we have seen this quarter prove we’re getting that right.”

Xfm’s managing director Nick Davidson said: ‘We are really pleased with this latest set of RAJAR results. The network figures have hit an all time high once again with Xfm Manchester showing an increase across the board.”

Nationally the BBC's share of audience dropped from the record 56% last quarter to 54.3% with declines for Radio 4 and its local stations.

Local commercial stations’ overall share of the UK market rose from 31.4% to 32.3%.

The radio stations in the North west are just rubbish at the moment.

Bring back some decent music and dj's that don't think they are bigger than the audience!
