Of Time and the City, a documentary film about Liverpool, has become one of only two UK films that will be shown to judges at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the ‘official selection’ process, which takes place later this month.
The 75 minute long piece, which is the work of Liverpudlian director Terence Davies, was one of three films that won North West Vision and Media’s Digital Departures initiative earlier this year. Liverpool: no longer 'on its kness' It mixes archive footage, photography and the 'sound of the city' from Davies' childhood days with the director's impressions of Liverpool now, after re-visiting from his current home in Essex. In doing so it is said the capture the optimism of the city and its new lease of life – a far cry to the place that he left in the 1970’s when, in his own words, it was “on its knees.” Sol Papadopoulos and Roy Boulter produced the film from their Merseyside-based company Hurricane Films. Papadopoulos described the news of the selection as “absolutely incredible” noting that of Time and the City would now be in the same category as new films from Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg The film is expected to receive its UK premiere in Liverpool at a special Capital of Culture presentation later this year. One of Davies’ previous films – Distant Voices, Still Lives – also enjoyed acclaim at Cannes, picking up the International Critics Award in 1998. Something to add?
