Nicola Shindler's Red Production Company has been commissioned by the BBC to film a new drama about Boy George's rise from obscurity to pop super-stardom.
Nicola Shindler's Red Production Company has been commissioned by the BBC to film a new drama about Boy George's rise from obscurity to pop super-stardom.

Worried About the Boy is due to commence filming in Manchester this month and features a cast that includes Matthew Horne, of Gavin and Stacy fame, and Marc Warren of Hustle. Newcomer Douglas Booth has been signed up to star in the main role.

The film forms part of BBC2's eighties season and will accompany adaptations of the Martin Amis classic Money and The Royal Wedding, written by Abi Morgan.

Shindler: excited
With stars such as Horne (Culture Club drummer Jon Moss) and Warren (who is set to play Visage front man Steve Strange) the commission will no doubt attract viewers and media attention, and is therefore quite a coup for Red.

Shindler said the project fitted her firm's objectives of tackling "provocative subjects with humour and warmth", adding: "I was very excited at taking such an iconic British character and showing a different side to a story everyone thinks they know.

"The early Eighties magical setting of the Blitz Club and the New Romantics is fun, visual and new to TV drama."

Worried About the Boy was written by Tony Basgallop and will be directed by Brideshead revisited director Julian Jarrold.

Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC Drama commissioning, and Janice Hadlow, controller of BBC2, commissioned the 90 minute film.

The eighties season will be broadcast in the spring.

"...Boy George's rise from obscurity to pop super-stardom..." and presumably his return to obscurity as well. And another thing; "....showing a different side to a story everyone thinks they know....". I very much doubt it love, George's entire life and oeuvre is an open book and there's nothing that's not already known about him. But this is how telly works, for How Doers not in the business. Past-it figures agree to co-operate with TV production company and the results are transmitted by a broadcasting company - everyone wins. Except the viewer of course.

Yawn - what a bitter and twisted character you are. Obviously, you were not good enough to win the business.
I for one am pleased to see a locally-based company getting the work. With your outlook on life wouldn't you be more suited to a life 'down south'?

...sorry, can't hear you...signal's breaking up....
