Enduring radio personality Mark Radcliffe has used the Radio Academy Production 08 conference in London to question the logic of moving BBC Radio 5 Live from the capital to the broadcaster’s new base at Media City.
Radcliffe Radcliffe, speaking yesterday, described the move as “an interesting choice,” but took the time to re-iterate his long held faith in the city and said that the station’s character would improve “enormously when it gets to Manchester.”He said: "I'm a big champion of the north. But it seems to be an interesting choice to put a rolling news network that needs a constant stream of guests and politicians... it's an interesting move to put that in Manchester." However, he added: "I'm not against that. As arguments about the licence fee and funding carry on, I think the more the BBC can do to reflect different parts of the UK has got to be a good thing.” Radcliffe, who famously persuaded Radio 1 bosses to let him host the station’s breakfast show from Manchester in 1997, is currently one half of Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie show. The programme, as listeners will be well aware, is also broadcast from Manchester. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/radcliffemaconie/
