The Office, Love Actually and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy star Martin Freeman is set to start filming in Manchester in a new gender-swapping ITV1 comedy drama.

The popular actor, famed for his gamut of generally befuddled expressions, will be exploiting that range to the full in a series that will see him swapping bodies with Racheal Stirling, star of Tipping the Velvet, after being hit by lightning.

The far-fetched plot line will see Freeman’s DIY store worker, a scruffy (perhaps befuddled) dreamer of limited prospects, change bodies with Stirling’s glamorous female fashion journalist.

Hilarious consequences are then expected to ensue as Danny (Freeman’s character) learns how to put on a bra, walk in high heels and cope with the advances of the journalist’s randy boyfriend, played by Paterson Joseph.

The four-parter has been written by new writer David Allison, produced by Alison Lumb and directed by Alrick Riley – who has previously worked on Spooks, the Fixer, Babyfather and Hotel Babylon. It was commissioned by Laura Mackie, ITV director of drama and Sally Haynes, controller of drama.

Boy Meets Girl executive producer Kieran Roberts has heralded the series as “a ripping gender swap comedy wrapped up in a tangled love story.”

The show will start recording in Manchester shortly.

May I venture that some of our best TV talents are in need of better managers. Martin Freeman is top of the list.

Some of our best TV talents might. Not sure what difference it would make to Martin Freeman though (cue befuddled expression)
