The BBC has announced within the last few minutes that its entire Learning department will now be based at MediaCityUK, with an extra 32 posts moving to Salford.
Originally the Learning Campaigns team, which runs events and roadshows around BBC programmes, such as Strictly Come Dancing and Bang Goes the Theory was to remain in London. But Learning’s controller Saul Nassé told staff this afternoon that he wanted the entire department to be based at MediaCityUK:
“Today’s announcement is about the future of BBC Learning. Over the next few years we want Learning to be responsible for consistently world class content that our audiences love. Remaining as a unified team will give us the best opportunity to make this happen.
Nasse
“The role of Learning has moved on since the initial decision was made for Campaign teams to stay in London, and although I recognise what a big impact this will have on people affected, I believe this is absolutely the right decision for the department.
“I can think of nowhere better for Learning to spend its future than as part of BBC North at MediaCityUK. The vision of what the BBC wants to achieve in the north of England is one I absolutely support and am excited that we can all be part of the team that will deliver that for the benefit of the whole UK.”
How-Do was told that another reason was that the department planned to run a number of outreach programmes to schools and universities in the North West, so it made sense to have the Campaigns team here.
Staff will now have 6 months to decide if they will move to Salford and if not, the jobs will be advertised locally.
Nassé was promoted to the position of controller in September last year after his predecessor opted not to leave London.
