Scarlet was founded by Trafford in November 2004 as a joint initiative with the then parent company, Medal Entertainment Media plc, which has subsequently gone into administration. The Manchester company has gained a reputation as a successful new production company.

Scarlet has produced factual and entertainment programmes for the BBC, ITV, Channel Five, Sky and Discovery. The company’s portfolio includes ‘Diana’s Last Day’ (ITV), ‘There’s Something About Morse’ (ITV), ‘What’s Eating Victoria Beckham?’ (FIVE), ‘Beefcake: A Very British Sex Symbol’ (BBC2), ‘Killer Forensics’ (AETN) and ‘Petrolheads’ (BBC2).
