Mrs Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room to be shot in Marple Bridge | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 22 January 2010

Film director Mike Le Han has been in touch with How-Do to talk about his latest project, Mrs Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room.

The short film is due to start shooting in Marple Bridge, Stockport on 5 February and promises to evoke a look and feel that is akin to the cinema outings of one Harry Potter.

Film director Mike Le Han has been in touch with How-Do to talk about his latest project, Mrs Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room.
Cox in the cast
Le Han told How-Do that it was "a huge project" that was already "creating a buzz" in industry and local media circles.

To date it has attracted over 30 cast and crew members, all of whom are getting involved for the "pure passion" of the film, rather than any financial benefits - the budget is "zero" apparently.

Hollywood film composer and orchestrator Kevin Kliesch has been brought in to score the piece (a veteran of features such as X-Men and Superman Returns), while Jane Cox (Emmerdale's Lisa Dingle) and Stephen Boye (No Angels) have been confirmed in the cast. Phil Leach is to be producer.

Le Han said that his feedback from the industry had told him that the crew would be "achieving the unachievable" and that the end product would be "a great film."

"We are hoping Warner Brothers will pick it up and tag it to their next Harry Potter feature as a preview film before the main feature," he added.

Le Han has been a drama director for 14 years and in 2009 was nominated for two gongs at the Royal Television Society Awards for his work on The Great Train Robbery and Crimes That Shook Britain, both Title Role productions.

The running time of Mrs Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room will be between eight and 15 minutes.

I live there...more traffic congestion!

Apparently the film crew tried to blag free food off a local pub landlord! And I was right...the traffic chaos is going to be appalling.

Inside info...apparently, there will be a snow machine used. Now, had they filmed it a couple of weeks ago...

I've just been there, and saw them filming. They have blocked off the whole road from cars, there is fake snow on the ground and yes a snow machine is in use.

How appropriate....anyone who's been to Marple Bridge will be well aware that you need to turn your watch back about 103 years!

The road was only closed from early evening to early morning. Traffic during the day was business as usual (and they were opened a number of times during the evenings for emergency vehicles and police).

In general people in the area were very supportive and helpful, including the fabulous local landlord. It's nice to know people can still show a sense of community and show a generosity of heart and spirit.

It's good to hear the locals were so helpful and supportive, however what a pity this wasn't reciprocated by the film crew who left without clearing away their considerable mess. This was thankfully done by the local fire department on Monday morning with all the ensuing additional traffic chaos. Will there be a financial contribution made to the clear up operation? It's noted that comments posted on Facebook have disappeared...

Mellor resident, you are miss informed, Marple Fire service at our request came and cleaned said street and any further paper snow (which is a non toxic biodegradable material) was cleaned the following day by the production team which included me. Yes I was there with brush in hand sweeping the pathways and shrubbery to put the street back to how we found it. I met with one of the community residents off the commity this evening who said they were delighted at how we had left it and that you would have never have known we'd been there. So next time before posting your comments please get your facts right. it is obvious that community spirit and heart is not in all of us... Mike Le Han (Resident of Marple Bridge)

One final point to mention, food was not provided for free, the production company paid the landlord at The Royal Scot for his food he generously made. No blagging was made, sure this was a no budget film with extremely high production value and everyone worked for free on 3 very long nights... but The Royal Scot was paid, as I well know I handed over cash to the landlord yesterday to pay said bill!

Mike, if you or anyone else needs any help/crew members within the Marple/Marple Bridge area then simply ask.

I'm always happy to help with such events.
