The Capital of Culture programme for next year has received a huge boost with the news that MTV has awarded Liverpool the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Williams: no prizes in 08? The glittering event, which is often as controversial as it is popular, has only been held in the UK twice before – with Edinburgh most recently staging the ceremony in 2003 and London hosting the 1996 show.Liverpool’s turn comes at a perfect time for the city – which is, of course, famous for its contributions to popular music – and for the new Echo Arena, which is all set to open its doors on the King’s Docks in January. The city’s win, yesterday, opened floodgates of praise in the national and local media, as superlatives gushed forth regarding Liverpool’s “natural” selection as host city. Culture Secretary James Purnell enthused: “"Liverpool is a creative force in the world music industry. This will make the European Capital of Culture year even more special;" while council leader Warren Bradley described it as a "watershed in Liverpool's return to the world stage.” Bryan Gray, the chairman of the Liverpool Culture Company (which led the bid to bring MTV to the city), added: “It's pop music coming home. There was huge competition to stage these awards, so this is a major coup for Liverpool. "This event and the plans we have to celebrate them will provide a huge international platform for the city, the arena and the music scene in Liverpool today." The event will be broadcast live across the MTV network on 6th November next year. This year’s ceremony will take place on 1st November in Munich and will be hosted by notorious, and notoriously enduring, rapper Snoop Dogg.
