Paul Newman, head of communications at the Liverpool Culture Company is to be the first head of communications at Media City UK from October.

Two further appointments in the team have also been made: Lisa Hill, currently undertaking project work at Media City, and Helen Johnson, currently a press officer at the Liverpool Culture Company.

Newman worked at the BBC in the North West in 1982 and has also worked for ITV, Sky News and covered the first Gulf War for TV-am.

Prior to joining the Liverpool Culture Company where his role is overseeing the comms team managing European Capital of Culture 2008, he was director of communications at the Football Association where his projects included the redevelopment of Wembley stadium and running the England team press office at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea.

Hill has previously worked at North West Vision and Media, Cosgrove Hall and Lime Pictures.

Media City chief executive Brian Greasley said: “Media City UK has an enormous communications remit, covering a range of target audiences and operating on regional, national and international levels.  I’m delighted that we’ve now secured a proven communications team who can start to actively take the Media City story out there.”

It is understood that the marketing budget for Media City UK is in excess of £1 million per year.

In addition to the BBC relocation in 2011, the £3billion complex has also attracted a major relocation of a Faculty of Salford University and ITV Granada is still expected to take space at Salford Quays, albeit outside the official boundaries of Media City adjacent to the Imperial War Museum.

A number of other international, national and regional companies are in various stages of negotiation with Media City about taking space in the first phase.

(wild shakes of head and despairing stare) the capital of culture year has been awesome. endless inspiring and varied events, real edgy stuff on the street, loads of local people involved. everything we feared it wouldn't be.

and that fear was felt because the comms was basically non-existent beforehand. we never saw or heard a peep from any of the ultimately very good and talented capital of culture people. just reactive barracking from the execs when the post & echo asked what was going on.

Watch out for spats with journos (check out the background to joe riley's suspension).

Good luck Paul - the only person I know who has appeared in an Ant and Dec music video!
