Press stick the boot in to BBC MediaCityUK move... again

The London-based press have today uncovered another reason to criticise the relocation of five BBC departments away from the capital to Salford's MediaCityUK development in 2011.

The London-based press have today uncovered another reason to criticise the relocation of five BBC departments away from the capital to Salford's MediaCityUK development in 2011.The Sun is leading the charge with a piece entitled 'What a flamin' waste' that suggests that the broadcaster will be spending up to £3m to send sports reporters to London to cover the 2012 Olympics, just a year after relocating them out of the metropolis.

It notes: "Insiders claim the BBC will be forced to fork out £2-£3million in flights, train fares, taxis and accommodation for them."

One 'Beeb insider' then laments: "This is the most ridiculous piece of planning.

"They should delay the move by a year or two rather than spend millions in extra cash.

"The BBC is already under fire for wasting money on expenses and now they are about to waste even more. It beggars belief."

A spokesperson for the corporation said that the plans for coverage were still being developed and "we can't speculate on the costs involved."

There have been multiple attacks on the corporation of late from an industry reeling from recessionary cuts and - according to some commentators - eyeing the BBC's publicly-funded purse with envy.

The MediaCityUK move has been heavily criticised for the expense involved, and the expenses packages that staff are being offered to help with their relocation.

BBC - Local Government - civil service etc, all virtually guaranteed as jobs for life - with guaranteed pensions - where they are immune to the usual consequences of incompetence and economic pressures. Very few of them would survive in the 'real world'.

agreed - less than 10% BBC staff would survive at Sky!
they could take up lecturing at all the meeja colleges...."I've never actually worked in the commercial world but this is the theory of it all...."
no wonder Media Studies gets such a bad name.

Sky are expanding and building an enormous broadcasting facility that'll be ready about the same time as Media City. So let the staff that don't want to move go there and us Northerners can stay north..Shimples!

The staff would have a shock tho working for a company with 'paying customers'. The management at Sky don't take any sh1t!!!

The problem is the London press and BBC staff think the world revolves around Landan mate.
The fact is, the BBC staff (who are any good) and don't want to move up north will find other work. However, my experience with the BBC staff is that they are mediocre at best and would struggle in the commercial world of broadcast. Let's be honest it is a very cushy number which is why sooo many of them have been at the beeb for years without a care to move anywhere else. Now they find themselves between a rock and a hard place.

As for the Olympics, it's one large event for one dept out of 5. However, if Lord Coe and his cohorts get their way I can see Sport staying in London until 2013. It must not be allowed to happen.

The jobs (for everyone, not just northerners!) this move will create outweigh a couple of milllion on travel.
The beeb have spent 200m+ on Formula one and Football league rights so it's hardly a significant sum for BBC sport.

and to the like of Simon Mayo, Mihir Bose et al...

..."welcome to the North, where we do what we bl00dy like!"
