Terry Smith, the founder of Radio City and former chair of Bauer Media’s Radio Group is to retire at the end of the month. The ex-Sunday Express and Granada journalist formed the Radio City consortium in 1974 and it went on to become Liverpool’s first commercial radio station.
He remained managing director for 17 years. “Staying in the same spot for 35 years seems incredible but it is simply due to the fact that there is nowhere in the world better to work than Liverpool and there is no better radio station than Radio City,” said Smith. Terry Smith In 1991 when Radio City was bought out by Emap, he remained chairman of the station and was invited onto Emap’s radio division board. That sparked an era of acquisitions, which ultimately led to the media company owning more than 40 local and national stations - until it was bought out by Bauer Media Group in January last year. "I have known Terry for 22 years as both a friend and a mentor. His official retirement will be a great loss to broadcasting, but his legacy lives on through the stations he created and helped to build,” added Dee Ford, group managing director, radio at Bauer Media, who started her own career at Radio City. “I know Terry will keep in close touch and am confident that there will be opportunities for us to unofficially call on his experience and wise counsel in the future."
