Indie Red Productions has struck an agreement whereby the Beeb will have first rights to all of Red’s drama output internationally over the next three years in return for investment in the company.
BBC Worldwide has previously secured similar arrangements with other indies including Left Bank Pictures in London whereby it took a 25% stake in the indie.
Neither BBCW (BBC Worldwide) nor Red would disclose whether en equity stake has been taken on this occasion.
Schindler Nicola Schindler, who founded Red (she is a MUFC season ticket holder) in Manchester in 1998 said Red had been in discussions with a number of companies about distribution agreements but ultimately felt BBCW offered the most synergies.
Red forged its reputation with drama shows including Clocking Off, Queer As Folk and subsequently Love In The 21st Century, Bob and Rose, Linda Green and currently New Street Law.
Paul Abbott and Russell T Davies have been closely involved with the company since its establishment and Davies is expected to return to the Red ‘fold’ once his present Dr Who commitments are over. Schindler, who forged her reputation as a scriptwriter on Cracker, has been described as a ‘one woman hit factory’.
Helen Jackson, director of independents at BBCW said they were pleased to be able to help Red fund and develop new programmes. www.redproductioncompany.com
