The Royal Television Society North West Awards took place on Saturday evening, with a touching tribute to the late Anthony H Wilson forming the centrepiece of the evening’s festivities.
The event, which was held at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester, celebrated the finest production and technical talent from the region’s television industry. Entries were received from regional and network productions and were open to individuals, production companies and broadcasters. Regular How-Do correspondent Jim Hancock was on hand for the occasion. He described the scene as the awards paid tribute to the “unique talent” of Wilson, with the titles of 100 programmes that the presenter and media/music legend had been involved in rolling across a giant screen. Wilson “It was more or less a history of Granada Television from the 1970s onwards,” commented Hancock, who also described how Wilson’s two children were called to the stage to receive ‘The Judges Award’ in honour of their father’s achievements. Wilson’s former colleagues responded by giving them a standing ovation. In terms of the wider awards it was a good night for Company Productions and Shameless Series Four which won the ‘Best Continuing Drama or Drama Series,’ while David Threlfall won ‘Best Performance’ in the show.
