The Royal Television Society North West has released what it describes as a ‘bumper’ shortlist of nominees for its 2009 awards ceremony being held on Saturday 14 November.
The dinner at the Hilton Deansgate is being compered by comedian John Bishop. RTS North West chair, Helen Bullough, said: “Each year I think the quality and range of entries can’t get any better and each year I’m incredibly proud to be proved wrong. “I have no doubt that our 2009 awards will, once again, make the rest of the UK TV industry sit up and take notice - as our brilliant and diverse productions, producers and on screen talent take a well deserved bow.” Nominees from the 21 categories on offer include titles such as The Street, Panorama, Cutting Edge, Dragons’ Den, Celebrity Mastermind, Shameless and Unforgiven. 2 By MEN cynic , on 29-09-2009 08:02 Morning Scoop - isn't that what awards are about..and in the process celebrating to a degree the level of talent in a sector. And I'd be surprised if anyone outside London in the broadcasting industry didn't cast covetous eyes at the size and activity of the broadcasting sector in the North West.
By Hmmmm , on 29-09-2009 08:21 Interesting regional news shortlist... How has Channel M failed to get a nomination in best regional news programme? And are Granada Reports trying to take over the entire ceremony? Or is it what I’ve heard that one particular Manchester-based broadcaster didn’t enter anything and the only productions and people (er person) shortlisted have been paid for out of their own pockets? Also strange that BBC NWT only has one nomination per category? Is there any truth to the rumor that there was a pre-qualifying competition at Oxford Road so that there was no internal competition on the night?
By Hmmm2 , on 29-09-2009 09:11 Maybe because it's not the best, perhaps?
By hmmm3 , on 29-09-2009 14:14 Granada's last year at the event before ITV ditch their regional news drivel for a more relevant provider, perhaps? Andy Crane's a freelancer at channel m. Salford Uni broadcast on channel m and have three nominations.
By hmmm4 , on 29-09-2009 14:39 I think the point about Channel M's nominations is that GMG/MEN Media have been quietly trying to edge out Salford University from the whole Channel M enterprise for ages, yet's it's Salford Univ who made the only programmes nominated on the channel. Unless I fell asleep while wading through the seemingly endless list and missed another, that is.
By hmmmm567 , on 29-09-2009 16:19 Without Sally Uni, Channel M would be showing the Little Frank testcard for 20 hours a day
By RTS , on 29-09-2009 16:21 err, channel m and salford uni have an excellent working relationship, so well wide of the mark with that comment. some of the senior producers at channel m spent time with Salford students and tutors hence the significant improvement in programme quality and award-winning onscreen and off-screen talent coming through year on year.
By hmmm5 , on 29-09-2009 16:37 ''Granada's last year at the event before ITV ditch their regional news drivel for a more relevant provider, perhaps?'' That doesn't appear to be the view of whoever has decided the nominations.
By RTS1 , on 29-09-2009 16:39 ''some of the senior producers at channel m spent time with Salford students and tutors hence the significant improvement in programme quality'' Shame that isn't reflected in what's left of Channel M's own programmes - or is that why they axed them?
By broadcast observer , on 29-09-2009 17:10 Caroline Hacking should be working for the Network, the rest are p!ss poor and have zero chance of a role once the new IFNC takes over next year. some quality programmes and nominations and quite rightly the North West should be celebrating the best of broadcasting in the region. good to see MUTV in there too, but no LFC TV?
By in the know , on 29-09-2009 17:23 "Shame that isn't reflected in what's left of Channel M's own programmes - or is that why they axed them?" is this present or past tense? tut tut I hope you're not a journo! I believe channel m / MEN Media have had 12 RTS nomninations and 3 wins in the past 4 years. Channel m / Salford Uni have had approx 18 nominations and 8 wins over the past ten years, 4 wins in the last four. so what was your point about quality and axing of shows again?
By Hmm2345 , on 30-09-2009 08:36 ...er...who's "comedian John Bishop"??? Bet I'm not the only one to ask either.
By hmmm4 , on 30-09-2009 08:58 John Bishop is one of the country's leading stand-ups, he was nominated for the big gong at the Edinburgh Festival.
By hulabaloo , on 12-10-2009 12:24 If this is the best we can produce out of North West's onscreen talent there is something wrong, I don't agree Caroline Hacking should be on the network, it's just that she is the only entertainment reporter up here, certainly not to be compared to the skills of entertainment presenters on the network. Aren't these awards voted for by the people in the industry? it doesn't reflect the thoughts of viewers, who surely are those that matter. These awards seem all fairly self indulgent and 'politics' led.
By elloll , on 12-11-2009 22:21 I cannot understand why Surranne Jones hasn't got a nom for best performance, hers was the best I've seen in years. Sure she'll get a bafta instead
